Set in the months before Half Bad, Half Lies takes the form of a diary written by Michele, the sister of Gabriel, Nathan’s Black witch friend. Having fled Europe for Florida, Michele falls in love with a local White witch boy. There, she finds that the divide between the Black and White witch communities is just as dangerous as it was in the life she’s left behind

Gabriel was one of my favourite characters from Half Bad, so I was eager to pick this novella up and learn more about his past.

This story is written in the form of diary entries from Gabriel’s sister, Michele. This allowed the author to include small back-and-forth notes between Gabriel and his sister – which were some of my favourite moments within this short novella.

It was interesting to learn more about Gabriel and a black witch, as the majority of Half Bad is centred around living with white witches.

Unfortunately I disliked the romance within this novella immensely. Michele and Sam had barely met three times before they were prepared to risk so much for each other. It was unrealistic. The fact that the romance played a major role caused me to give this a lower rating.

The ending was sad, however, much with Half Bad this story failed to evoke an emotional response from me.
