#DiversityBingo2017 Announcement + Recommendations Part 1

This announcement is very late and chances are that you’ve already heard of the #DiversityBingo2017. If you have and are only here for the recommendations, feel free to scroll down to after the bingo sheet. If you have no idea what the #DiversityBingo2017 is, then keep reading.

After the success of the #DiversityDecBingo we, the other hosts and I, decided to host a year-long diversity themed bingo to give more people the chance to participate and to encourage people to read diversely throughout the year. The concept is the same as the #DiversityDecBingo but instead of having only a month to reach a bingo, you have the entirety of 2017 to complete as many squares as possible. There are 36 squares, each with a different diversity-centered prompt. All you have to do is find a book which corresponds to each of the topics and read it. Novels, comics, graphic novels, novellas and poetry collections all count towards this challenge. The only rule is that you cannot double-up on categories, you must read 36 different books to successfully have completed the board.

Furthermore, whilst it’s not a requirement to read #ownvoice books (unless stated on the square), I highly recommend you do so. The whole aim of this challenge is to try and read as many books with good representation and you best chance of doing that is by reading books by authors who share the same identity as the characters.

Unlike last time I won’t be giving recommendations for every single square in this post. Instead I’ve every two months I’ll make a post with recommendations for one row. So in this post I’ll be providing recommendations for just the first row.

These aren’t only books you can read and there’s probably loads of great choices I’ve missed, so if you do know any books which fit the categories of the first row feel free to leave them in the comments! Also, if you have/know of any posts which have recommendations for the #DiversityBingo2017 feel free to link them in the comments too.

Lastly, since some of the categories do overlap with the categories we had during the #DiversityDecBingo you can check out my #DiversityDecBingo Annoucement + Recommendations post for more recs.

I tried to avoid putting books about WW2 for this, because Jewish characters should not be limited to those types of stories. However, if you do want to read a book set during WW2 for this category then feel free to.

Since I have not read all of these book I cannot vouch for how good they are in terms of representation or on how well they fit their respective category. I looked at a number of reviews/blog posts when picking these books but I still might have missed something, so if you have read any of these books and think they don’t fit the category I’ve put them in or know that they’re bad rep/problematic then please let me know in the comments so that I can find a replacement!

If you have any recommendations for any of these categories don’t forget to also leave those in the comments!

Will you be participating in the #DiversityBingo2017? What categories are you most excited for? Do you have any suggestions for future categories? Tell me in the comments!
